Eric Thorsen began his Professional career as an Artist carving sculptures in wood. Competing in an assortment of national and world sculpture competitions, Eric earned numerous awards for his fantastically detailed wood sculptures. In 1992 Eric won the World Carving Competition! Earning the title “Best in the World” triggered collectors to scramble for his sculptures. It was at that time Eric began exploring sculpting with clay and casting in bronze utilizing the lost wax method to produce his sculptures.

About the paintings & prints

Idea/Concept

Eric has always enjoyed drawing and painting. Eric paints using Oils, acrylic, guache, watercolor and even new forms of digital art. Only recently has Eric been publishing and releasing his original paintings & prints to the public.  He travels to the location to sketch paint or photograph the landscape.

What is a Giclée?

A Giclée is an individually produced, high resolution print with rich color from a digital source using a sophisticated ink-jet printer. Giclees use inkjet technology that is far more sophisticated than a desktop printer. This method of printing produce prints of the highest quality on many kinds of professional media such as a matte paper or canvas. Giclée prints are durable and long lasting. The result is a print that is superior to traditional lithography prints. In comparing them to other media, they fall somewhere between original art and traditional limited edition lithographs.

Canvas or Matte Giclée

Giclées can be printed on many types of media. The most common are matte paper, gloss paper or canvas designed for long life and rich color. Most commonly used papers are matte. This allows the print to be framed with glass and reduces glare as compared to a glossy paper. Giclées printed on canvas offer a rich texture found on art canvases. Typically canvases are not framed in glass so that the texture of the canvas adds to the look and feel of the print.

About the bronze sculptures

Idea/Concept

Eric relies on his knowledge of anatomy and inspiration from imagination for ideas in creating his sculptures.  Each sculpture is created in clay or wax. The types of clay Eric uses varies from oil base (tan color) or water base (brown color).  Eric works in many types of media in both sculpting and painting.

How is the sculpture made?

Most of his sculptures are created with oil based clay or wax. We post images of new works in progress weekly. The tan color "unfinished" sculptures are made of clay and the red colored "unfinished" sculptures are made from wax

What is bronze?

Bronze is composed of about 96% copper, 1%silicone, and 3% zinc.  Variations of this formula have been used for centuries.

How are bronze sculptures made?

Eric creates an original sculpture in clay, wood or wax.  Once completed the sculpture is cast into bronze using the “lost wax” casting method.  This method of casting was used by many of the Great master sculptors such as Rodin, Remington and

What is the finish color of the Bronze sculptures?

Traditional bronze sculptures are patinaed, the surface of the metal is chemically altered in a controlled manner using acids.   Eric enjoys color in his sculpture. You may notice some bronzes that are hand painted with acrylics rather than a traditional patina.

Why Collect Bronze Sculpture?

Sculptures created in bronze can endure several thousand years!

What is meant by “Limited Edition”?

Only a limited number of bronze sculptures are produced of each unique design. Each can be considered an original work of art due to the arduous nature of the process required for casting.

The Care of Bronze Sculpture

 Procedures

The enclosed information describes recommended methods to care for bronze sculptures that are created by Eric Thorsen.  Please check with sculpture restorers if you are caring for antique sculptures or sculptures from other artists.
If you have any questions or concerns related to Eric’s sculpture please call the Gallery at 406-837-4366

It is normal for bronze sculptures tend to darken with age and eventually they will stabilize.

Never apply furniture polish on the surface of the bronze.  Furnature polish often have added ingredients to speed up the drying process and can be corrosive to the patinae.

Patinas (Sculptures Displayed Indoors)

Sculptures displayed indoors require minimal maintenance.  Most of Erics sculptures are protected by either wax applied directly to the patinae or wax coated over a protective laquer finish applied directly to the patina.

If you choose once or twice a year may apply a thin coat of paste wax to the bronze.   Apply the wax by applying a very small amount of wax to the brush. You should not be able to see any wax on the brush. Do not add too much wax or a white build up will occur. Less is better, it only takes a very small amount on the brush. Gently brush the wax onto the sculpture. Let the wax ‘set up’ for about 5 minutes. Then, using a clean soft cloth, buff to the desired degree of shine. If you get carried away and think there is too much gloss, just apply another thin coat of wax and proceed as directed, but don’t use so much elbow grease!!

Patinas (Sculptures Displayed Outside)

Wash the sculpture with non-ionic soap, rinse and dry thoroughly, then follow the procedure described above for interior scultpures. We recommend cleaning outdoor sculptures at least 2 times a year but this varies depending on geographic location, climate and type of setting. Sculptures that have irrigation systems leaving spotting on them may need additional cleanings performed during the year. Also sculptures displayed in a fountain may need additional cleanings performed. Sculptures displayed in water or in an environment where water is sprayed on them will likely turn green. This is normal

Hand Painted Bronzes

If your bronze has been hand painted by Eric, follow these directions:
An occasional light dusting with a soft cloth will do the trick. Do not use wax or cleaning products!!  We use wax only for patinad sculptures.  The paint has been covered by a thin coat of clear sealer to protect it. If part of the bronze is colored by a foundry patina, you may apply the paste wax to this section only, as directed in the section of this guide “Patinas (sculptures displayed indoors)”. Please call Eric Thorsen Sculpture Gallery to identify areas that are painted or patinaed.

Sculpture Pedestals & Wood Bases

Our pedestals, tables, and wood bases are finished with a hand rubbed furniture finish. To restore shine, buff lightly with a soft cloth. Do not use spray-on furniture polish! Finish may also be buffed lightly with 0000 steel wool before polishing with a soft cloth.

For additional care, rub in a light coat of BRIWAX moving with the grain. Allow drying a few minutes, and buff with a clean soft cloth, again with the grain.

Marble Bases

Apply a thin coat of paste wax with a soft cloth and polish immediately with a clean soft cloth. We recommend (and can order for you) “Stone Soap” for cleaning marble or granite fountains that have collected mineral deposits..
