Description

Spirulida is a spirula cephalopod sculpture by Eric Thorsen: a Spirula, a small squid-like cephalopod with a coiled internal shell. It is part of his paleobiology series on ancient cephalopods.

About This Spirula Cephalopod Sculpture

Unlike most coiled cephalopods, Spirula carries its small coiled shell inside its body, and the shells still wash up on beaches today. Fossils show only the shell, so Thorsen’s reconstructions imagine the living animal, its body and tentacles restored around the shell as it might have looked in ancient seas. The series makes a fascinating collection for fossil lovers, museums, classrooms and anyone curious about life in deep time.
